Good to see that you joined the Beginning Blogger Challenge. People giving back to the blogging community is what really keeps it thriving.

You’re right that you shouldn’t really expect much from your blog for the first while. I don’t know if 1 year is really the magic number as it all depends on what you put into it. Still, you have to realize that just starting a blog won’t produce an instant stream of traffic and money. You have to work hard and put the effort in to see the results and even then it takes a long time to really build up.

The part that a lot of bloggers don’t realize before starting out is that you have to be willing to put in a lot of time doing things other than just writing posts. To really get noticed you have to spend a ton of time commenting on other blogs and networking with other bloggers.

@Dr Dean: I was a big hater. Never in a direct, confrontational way, just always dismissing everybody else, there was a lot of “Pfffft” in my my vocabulary (dismissive sound).

@John: Great advice and I embrace the “be patient” part. I’m not patient at all, but I’m working on it.

Thanks–as a novice blogger, this sort of advice and info is extremely useful and motivating. One of the main challenges for me is feeling like I’m working in a vacuum. Friends and family ask me–’How’s the blog coming along?’ My answer is usually something like ‘I wish I knew!’ I have little idea whether the modest progress I’ve made since launching my blog last November is poor, average, or above average, compared to the ‘typical’ blog, if there is such a thing. I just keep forging ahead, experimenting, and doing my best to add value.
